On the evening of July 27 local time, the military spokesperson of the Houthi forces in Yemen, Yahya Al-Saraya, issued a statement announcing that the Houthi forces would intensify their military support operations in the Gaza Strip and begin implementing the fourth phase of their maritime blockade against the enemy. This decision has drawn widespread attention from the international community, particularly regarding concerns about the safety of maritime traffic in the Red Sea.
According to the statement, the maritime targets of the Houthi forces will include all ships owned by shipping companies that have business dealings with Israeli ports, regardless of the country's flag they fly under, and irrespective of whether they are located within the strike range of the Houthi forces or not. The Houthi forces have warned all shipping companies that they should immediately cease all business dealings with Israeli ports from the moment this statement is issued. Otherwise, these ships will be subjected to attacks by the Houthi forces' missiles and drones.
In the statement, the Houthi forces made it clear that all shipping companies engaged in business with Israeli ports, regardless of their nationality, would be considered targets for attack. The Houthi forces warned that the vessels of these companies, no matter where they were sailing, could be subject to missile or drone attacks from the Houthi forces. This warning not only poses a direct threat to shipping companies but also brings new challenges to global shipping security.
It is worth noting that since July, the Houthi forces have significantly intensified their attacks. On July 6, the UK Maritime Trade Organization (UKMTO) reported that a Liberian-flagged bulk carrier, the "Magic Seas," was attacked approximately 51 nautical miles southwest of Hudaydah, resulting in a fire on board and flooding, forcing the crew to abandon ship.
On the evening of July 9, the Houthi forces used an unmanned speedboat and six missiles to launch an attack on the "Eternity C" vessel, which was flying the flag of Liberia and heading towards Eilat, Israel, and successfully sank the vessel.
Abdul Malik al-Houthi, the leader of the Houthi armed forces, stated that the Houthi armed forces would continue to prohibit vessels associated with Israel from passing through the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the Arabian Sea. He emphasized that any vessel attempting to transport goods related to Israel would be barred from these waters. This stance indicates that the Houthi armed forces will continue to escalate their military actions against Israel, posing significant challenges to maritime security in the Red Sea.
The fourth phase of the maritime blockade by Houthi forces poses a direct threat not only to Israel's shipping interests but also introduces new risks to global shipping security. The international community urges all parties to exercise restraint and prevent the escalation of the situation.
