On June 23, the Thai military ordered the closure of all border checkpoints with Cambodia, whether permanent or temporary. Cambodia subsequently took corresponding measures by closing its border crossings with Thailand entirely.

The decision, which took effect on 24 June, suspended all cross-border vehicle transport and trade activities except for humanitarian needs. Only Cambodian citizens in Thailand were allowed to return home.

Before the border was closed, large numbers of people and goods were flocking to the border, causing severe congestion at international checkpoints in seven provinces of Cambodia. At the international border crossing in Pombe, for example, a large number of Cambodian businessmen working in Thailand are in a queue waiting to return home. Meanwhile, Thai nationals in Cambodia are preparing to return to Thailand.

The two countries provided a temporary window for the final crossing of Bobem between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m on 24 June, while the other crossing points were allowed to operate for only one hour between 5 and 6 p.m.2.

In addition, some Cambodian patients who received treatment in Thailand also returned to Cambodia through border crossings. Panitan Wattanayagorn, a Thai expert, said the border closure would affect Cambodian workers and businesses first and foremost, but in the long run Thai business would also be hurt more if the situation continued.

The closure, which is indefinite and expected to last until the security situation stabilizes, has not only affected road freight transport and the movement of people, but has also raised concerns among globally renowned logistics companies, which have issued warnings to customers.
