In response to U.S. tariffs, 27 countries have passed the measure by an overwhelming majority | Maritime Export Logistics

Jul 25,2025

The 27-member European Union voted overwhelmingly on July 24th to impose retaliatory tariffs on 93 billion euros worth of American goods. The move marks a tougher stance by the EU in the trade dispute.

Earlier, European Commission spokesman Orlov Gill said on July 23 that the EU plans to combine the two retaliatory tariff lists to form a single list of a total of 93 billion euros. The two lists are:

The first round of tariff measures has been approved by member states in April this year, involving U.S. soybeans, motorcycles, jeans and other goods, a total of about 21 billion euros.

Second round of tariff measures: Another list passed on July 23, covering mainly high-value industrial products such as aircraft, automobiles and electrical equipment, valued at about 72 billion euros.

Gill stressed that if a satisfactory trade deal cannot be reached before the US tariffs take effect on August 1, the EU's countermeasures will begin to take effect on Aug. 7.

Meanwhile, South Korea's tariff talks with the United States, scheduled for July 25 in Washington, were canceled due to a temporary notice from the United States side, shocking the South Korean government. The meeting, which had been seen as a key plank in a negotiating breakthrough before the reciprocal tariffs took effect on August 1, suddenly fell apart, with hopes of a "time-bound deal" widely seen as remote.

According to a statement issued by South Korea's Finance Ministry on July 24, U.S. Treasury Secretary Benson decided to postpone the meeting due to a conflict of protocol. When the notice was issued, Kwae Ryong-chul, South Korea's deputy prime minister and finance minister for corporate planning, had arrived at Incheon airport to leave, and was forced to make a temporary return flight only 1 hour and 25 minutes before boarding. Despite an apology from the US side and a promise to reschedule the meeting as soon as possible, a new schedule has not yet been set.

The global trade situation has become increasingly complicated with the EU's retaliatory tariff decision and the temporary cancellation of tariff talks between the US and South Korea. In the context of escalating trade disputes, negotiations and consultations between countries are of particular importance.
