Put pressure on the United States! The European Union: Will implement additional tariffs as countermeasures! | Maritime Export Logistics

Jun 25,2025

According to a report by the Financial Times on June 24, Birger Seibert, Chief of Staff to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, stated that before the July 9 deadline for the conclusion of trade negotiations between the EU and the US, the EU needs to coordinate its stance internally and be prepared to impose additional tariffs as a countermeasure against the US, in order to create a "genuine threat."

According to Seibert, von der Leyen is prepared to escalate the countermeasures against the United States by imposing tariffs in an effort to secure a better agreement. He expressed his hope that EU member states will support a package of tariffs on US goods worth €95 billion, while the EU is also preparing measures targeting the service sector, including taxing US technology companies and restricting American businesses from securing public procurement contracts.

Von der Leyen had previously emphasized that during negotiations, the sovereign decision-making process involving the EU and its member states was something that the US should not touch.

Currently, the United States imposes a 50% tariff on steel and aluminum products from the European Union, a 25% tariff on automotive products, and a 10% baseline tariff on almost all other goods. President Trump has also threatened to impose a 50% tariff if there is no breakthrough in the EU-US trade negotiations by July 9.

In response, the EU had decided to impose tariffs of up to 50% on US imports totaling 21 billion euros, but to give time for trade negotiations, the tariffs were postponed until July 14.
