From January to June this year, China's exports to the United States decreased by 9.9% | Maritime Export Logistics

Jul 14,2025

China's imports and exports to the United States totaled 2.08 trillion yuan, down 9.3 percent from the same period last year, according to trade data released by the General Administration of Customs on the morning of July 14. Specifically, from January to June this year, China's exports to the United States were 1.55 trillion yuan, down 9.9%, while imports were 530.35 billion yuan, down 7.7%.

The General Administration of Customs analyzed that, affected by the so-called "reciprocal tariffs" implemented by the United States, China-U.S. trade changed from an annualized rate of growth in the first quarter to a year-on-year decline in the second quarter, and the decline reached 20.8%.

Since Trump returned to the White House on January 20, he has raised tariffs on China to 145 percent, citing the fentanyl issue and the policy of reciprocal tariffs, and China has immediately imposed a 125 percent retaliatory tariff on U.S. goods.

The escalation of this trade dispute has had a significant negative impact on the economic and trade relations between the two countries. However, by May of this year, following Sino-US negotiations in Geneva, US tariffs on Chinese goods were reduced from 145 per cent to 30 per cent, including a 20 per cent tariff on fentanyl and a 10 per cent benchmark tariff.

In response, China also reduced its tariffs on the United States from 125% to 10%. In June, Chinese and American officials reached a framework after holding trade talks in London, in which China said it would legally approve export applications for eligible controlled items, while the United States planned to remove a series of restrictive measures against China.

Wang Lingjun, deputy head of China's General Administration of Customs, said at a press conference on July 14 that the Chinese and American teams are now stepping up implementation of the relevant outcomes reached in the framework of the London talks. This shows that despite the many challenges in China-U.S. trade in the first half of the year, both sides are actively seeking solutions to improve trade relations and put bilateral trade back on track.
