On July 12 eastern time, Trump posted a letter to Mexico and the European Union on social media "Real Social," announcing that the United States would impose a 30% tariff on exports from Mexico and the EU from August 1, 2025. Mexico and the EU have reacted very differently to the threat of US tariffs.

The Mexican government moved quickly, setting up a "standing bilateral working group" on July 11 to address security, immigration and economic issues with the United States.

Mexico considers the U.S. tariff measures "unfair treatment" and has begun negotiations with the United States to protect businesses and jobs at the border, Mexico's foreign and economic ministries said in a joint statement. During the talks, both sides agreed that the priority was to find an alternative that would protect businesses and jobs on both sides of the border while avoiding tariffs.

On the European Union side, European Commission President Jean-Claude von der Leyen said on July 13 that after receiving the letter from the United States, the European Union will extend the suspension of countermeasures against the United States tariffs until early August, while continuing to prepare countermeasures. The EU's decision, however, raised questions internally.

Lange, chairman of the European Parliament's International Trade Committee, took to social media to publicly question that another concession was not the right strategy, stressing that negotiations could be pursued simultaneously and balanced countermeasures.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel also expressed concern about the 30 percent tariffs imposed on August 1, arguing that they would hit Germany's export industry hard, while expressing hope that a solution could be found by August 1.
