Breaking News! Trump Announces Trade Agreement with Vietnam: 20% Tariffs for Vietnam, 40% Tariffs for Transit Through Vietnam | Maritime Export Logistics
Jul 03,2025

On the evening of July 2, Eastern Time, Trump announced on social media TruthSocial that the United States had reached a new trade agreement with Vietnam. According to it, the content of the agreement mainly consists of three points:
1. The United States imposed tariffs of at least 20 percent on Vietnamese exports.
2. The US will impose tariffs of up to 40 per cent on goods re-exported through Vietnam to the US, a move interpreted by the market as aimed at curbing some Chinese companies from using Vietnam to circumvent US tariffs.
3. Vietnam agreed to cut taxes on U.S. products to "zero."
At present, the United States has not released a list of specific goods subject to the 40 percent tariff. The United States is a key export destination for Vietnamese textiles and sportswear, and well-known brands such as Nike, Gap and Lululemon have manufacturing plants in Vietnam.
As a major trading partner of the US, Vietnam became the sixth largest source of imports to the US last year, with exports to the US approaching 137 billion US dollars.
Although it is not clear how the United States will implement the 40 percent tariff on re-exported goods, the market generally believes that if the tariff policy is officially implemented, it will completely shut down the re-export trade channel of China's goods exported to the United States through Vietnam.
