Trump's Latest Threat: No Consideration of Extending the Deadline for Tariff Negotiations, and Specific Threats Against Japan | Maritime Export Logistics
Jul 02,2025

On July 1, local time, US President Donald Trump stated on Air Force One that he had no intention of extending the July 9 deadline for negotiations on trade agreements between various countries and the US.
According to a previous report by the Associated Press, Trump has no intention of extending the 90-day tariff suspension period for most countries and regions beyond July 9th. Once the negotiation period ends, the US will notify the relevant countries and regions that if no agreement is reached, trade punitive measures will come into effect.

Trump stated that he would send letters to relevant countries and regions "soon" before the deadline, and said on Fox News, "We will evaluate the attitude of each country towards us, whether friendly or unfriendly. There are some countries that we do not care about, and we will simply send them high tariffs." He mentioned that the letters would state, "Congratulations on being granted permission to purchase American goods; you will need to pay 25%, 35%, 50%, or 10% tariffs." This indicates that the US government is prepared to abandon negotiations to resolve trade disputes.
Trump also specifically criticized Japan, expressing doubts about reaching an agreement. He stated that the US had already engaged in negotiations with Japan, but there was uncertainty about whether an agreement could be reached, and that tariffs on Japanese imports could be significantly higher than the previously announced 24% rate.
Trump believes that US-Japan trade is "unfair" and may send a letter to Japan demanding a 25% auto tariff. The US-Japan trade negotiations are currently at a standstill, and the seventh round of ministerial talks has not yielded any breakthroughs. The core disagreement lies in auto tariffs, with Japan requesting the US to lower tariffs but the US unwilling to compromise.
According to previous reports, during a Fox News program on June 29, Trump stated, "Japan does not import American cars, but the United States imports millions of Japanese cars, which is unfair, and Japan has acknowledged this." He also mentioned that he would send a letter to end the trade negotiations, pointing out the significant trade deficit between the United States and Japan, and demanded that Japan import more American oil and other products in order to make concessions.
