Effective today! Unexpected development in the United States: uniform 50% tariff! | Maritime export logistics
Jun 23,2025

The US Department of Commerce announced that from June 23, it will impose a 50% tariff on a variety of steel-made household appliances, including dishwashers, washing machines, refrigerators and other "steel derivative products."
According to the BIS notice, eight categories of household appliances and related products have been added as "steel derivative products," and 50% tax rate is uniformly applied, and the tax amount is calculated according to the value of steel components in the product. These products include combined refrigerators, freezers, dryers, washing machines, dishwashers and more. The policy provides for exceptional provisions to exempt products that use domestically smelted steel raw materials in the United States and are processed overseas.
This is the second time the Trump administration has expanded the range of tariff products since it raised tariffs on imported steel and aluminum in March. It was previously announced on February 10 that the steel and aluminum tariffs would be set at 25% from March 12, and on June 3 it was raised to 50% and expanded the scope of the levy. This tariff policy adjustment and extension may further increase the burden on US consumers.
On June 21 ET, Bloomberg reported that the United States demanded what it considered "unbalanced unilateral" concessions from the European Union in trade negotiations, including fish export quotas that may not comply with WTO rules and non-reciprocal tariff measures.
While both sides hope to reach a principled agreement by July 9, the analysis notes that even if a deal is reached, many of Trump's tariffs will remain. The EU has always sought mutually beneficial agreements and will evaluate the outcome and determine the extent to which an unequal arrangement is acceptable.
At present, in addition to facing a 10% "benchmark tariff," the EU also bears a 25% automotive tariff and 50% steel and aluminum tariffs. If no consensus is reached by July 9, US tariffs on most EU goods could rise from 10 per cent to 50 per cent.
In the face of the US position, the EU is ready for both hands. Bloomberg reported that the European Union has approved tariffs on 21 billion euros of U.S. goods in response to Trump's metal tariffs, which target politically sensitive U.S. states.
In addition, the EU also prepared a 95 billion euros tariff list of American products, covering Boeing aircraft, US-made cars and other industrial products, in response to Trump's "reciprocal tariffs" and car tariffs. European Commission President Jean-Claude von der Leyen said the EU had a variety of tools to respond.
