According to customs data, China's total import and export volume from January to May in 2025 was nearly 18 trillion yuan, an increase of 2.5%, of which exports reached 10.6 trillion yuan, an increase of 7.2%. Although the tariff war intensified in April and the high tariffs were lifted in the first round of negotiations between China and the United States in May, exports to the United States fell by 21% and 34% respectively in the two months.
Fortunately, China's exports to ASEAN, the European Union, Africa and Latin America have expanded and increased at a high rate, which has kept the overall export growth positive. Here's a look at the main export commodities of China from January to May this year.
Agricultural Products: The export volume is 296 billion yuan, and the export volume of grain is 1.14 million tons.
Refined Oil: Exports exceeded 20 million tons.
Rare Earth: 24,800 tons of total export amount of 1.2 billion yuan. May exports nearly 6000 tons, the amount of 130 million yuan. China's rare earth exports are mainly used for civilian purposes, and a tracking system has been introduced to strictly regulate exports.
Labor-intensive products: textile yarn, fabric and products exports 420 billion yuan, clothing and accessories exports 418 billion, 126 billion shoes exports, a total of 964 billion yuan. Exports of mechanical and electrical products totaled 6.4 trillion yuan, accounting for 60.3% of total foreign trade exports, of which exports of machinery and equipment exceeded 200 billion yuan, an increase of 9.5%; Exports of automated data processing equipment and parts were more than 570 billion yuan, an increase of 4%. Mobile phone exports exceeded 300 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 7.4%; Home appliances exported more than 290 billion yuan; The export of integrated circuits (chips) was 52.6 billion yuan, up nearly 19% year-on-year; Ship export was 143.8 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 18.9%.
Automobile and spare parts: Total exports totaled 635 billion yuan, becoming the first five months of this year, China's largest export of goods. Among them, 351.3 billion yuan of automobile exports, 283.7 billion yuan of spare parts exports. China has ranked first in the world in auto exports, with 2.49 million vehicles exported in the first five months of 2025, up nearly 8 percent year on year. Chery and BYD have seen rapid export growth, but Chinese automakers still need to improve in terms of profits.
In conclusion, in the face of a complex foreign trade situation, China's multi-market layout has helped export growth. Automotive exports were particularly strong, but higher profits remained a challenge. In the future, Chinese car companies need to expand international markets, increase profits, and move toward a powerful automobile industry.
