Jun 10,2025

The shipping market has seen new developments, with the Danish container shipping giant Maersk announcing that it will impose a peak season surcharge (PSS) on shipments to South Africa and Mauritius.

The adjustment will take effect from June 23, and for Taiwan Province in China, it will start from July 9.

The specific charges are as follows: when all 20-foot dry containers and all 40-foot dry containers are shipped from Far Eastern ports such as China / Hong Kong / Indonesia / Japan / South Korea / Malaysia / the Philippines / Singapore / Cambodia / Laos / Myanmar / Thailand / Vietnam / Taiwan to South Africa / Mauritius, a peak season surcharge of USD 300 will be applied to all 20-foot dry container shipments, and a peak season surcharge of USD600 will be applied to all40-foot dry container shipments.

MSC also recently announced the latest freight rates effective from June 15, 2025, which will continue until further notice, but no later than June 30, 2025.

These updated freight rates apply to shipments from all Far Eastern ports, including but not limited to Japan, South Korea, and Southeast Asia, to destinations in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean (covering the Western Mediterranean, Eastern Mediterranean, Adriatic Sea, and North Africa), and ports in the Black Sea.

The adjustment of these fees reflects the current operating pressure and demand changes faced by the shipping market in different routes. For relevant import and export enterprises, timely understanding and responding to these fee changes is of great significance for controlling logistics costs and ensuring the stability of the supply chain.
