Freight rates have soared, with an increase of nearly 42%! Shipping export logistics

Jun 09,2025

The latest issue of Shanghai Container Export Freight Index (SCFI) rose again, achieving the feat of five consecutive rises, up as high as 167.64 points, climbed to 2,240.35 points, a weekly increase of 8.1%.

Driven by the strong performance of the four major routes, the Far East to the United States East fares were particularly bright, leading the way with a 11.14 percent increase. The South American line is even more like a wild horse, surging nearly 42 percent in a week and becoming the focus of the market.

However, behind this seemingly good rally, there are undercurrents. On June 1, ship companies' increases in freight prices quickly returned, and industry analysts have pointed out that with the gradual investment and recovery of capacity on the US route, freight prices have quietly peaked back down.

South America (Santos) freight rate rose $1,162 a week / TEU, up 41.54%. The industry generally believes that this is closely related to shipowners transferring ships to the US line, which has achieved a rise of more than 40% for two consecutive weeks. In the current market environment, carriers are putting their ships on the North American line as soon as they have them and fill them quickly. As long as there are containers and cabins, we can gain an advantage in the fierce market competition. Changes in market demand have directly contributed to the increase in freight prices, but the duration of demand has become a key factor in determining how long the trend will be strong.

In terms of US-Mexico freight rates, the US-Spain freight rate was raised to $6,000-$6,100 per 40 cubic meters on June 1, but fell rapidly to $5,500 on June 3, with the increase of overtime ships and additional ships. This week, the Southwest route is expected to drop further to $5,100 and the Northwest to between $5,500 and $6,000, while the East and West fares are relatively stable at between $6,500 and $7,000, a relatively small drop. Freight forwarders generally expect the shipping company's planned price increase on June 15 to fall short.

Previously, shipping companies had planned to increase freight prices for the US route by another $1,500-2000 on June 15, increasing freight prices on the southwest and northwest US routes to $7,500-8,000 and the east US to $8,000. Even the Gemini Alliance has reported a planned increase of $4,000 to $10,000. However, analysis by large freight forwarders believes that the June 15 price increase is largely certain to not be realized due to the rapid relocation of ships by their peers and the addition of several new routes.

The transportation industry has taken advantage of the tariff moratorium to rush out shipments, which has driven the current rally on the US line. But after entering June, the rally has slowed significantly and even showed signs of hitting a peak, a change that has caused widespread concern in the market. Although SCFI achieved five consecutive rises, but the shipping company shouted up the United States soon after the West back about 500 dollars.

This week, freight prices on the U.S. route continued to be reduced by about 100-400 dollars, and prices were quoted at about 5,100-5400 dollars. Analysts forecast that the Mississippi offer may be closer to $5,000-5,500 in late June, indicating that market demand is cooling and freight prices may have peaked.

High rates have attracted investment from a number of new routes, overtime ships and new shipowners, with new capacity concentrated on the US-West route and relatively small increases in the US-East. DeLuuri predicted that weaker demand in the second half of the year would put downward pressure on freight prices.

Here are the details of current SCFI rates:
