Sudden! A car transport ship departing from China caught fire, once docked in Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Yantai, carrying 800 electric vehicles! | Maritime export logistics

Jun 05,2025

In the early morning of June 4, 2025, a pure car carrier "Morning-Midas" from China to North America caught fire in the Pacific Ocean. The ship carried about 3,000 vehicles, of which about 800 were new energy resources vehicles. The crash occurred about 300 nautical miles (about 483 kilometers) southwest of the island of Adak, Alaska.

The "Morning Midas" departed from Shanghai on May 26 and was scheduled to stop at Yantai Port (TBC). It was scheduled to arrive at Port Lhasa Cárdenas in Mexico on June 15 for motor vehicle transport from China to North America. It is unclear what makes and models of new energy vehicles are on board, but it is presumed that they may include mainstream Chinese new energy resources automakers.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard in the early hours of June 4, all 22 crew members on board were safely evacuated when the fire broke out, with no injuries. After the crew was evacuated in a lifeboat, they were picked up by nearby vessels. The US Coast Guard has sent air support and patrol ships, and three merchant ships (including the USS Manukai and COSCO Hellas) are on the scene to assist with the fire and rescue.

The "Morning Midas," managed by London-based Zodiac Maritime Shipping, is Liberian-flagged and built in 2006. It is owned by Hawthorn Navigation Inc., a member of the UK Steamship Mutual Association, and leased by Zhejiang Anji Logistics Co., Ltd.

According to a statement from Zodiac Maritime, the fire first appeared on the cargo deck of a new energy resources vehicle. The crew tried to use a shipboard fire extinguishing system but failed to control the fire, and finally decided to abandon the ship.

The United States Coast Guard has opened an investigation and will coordinate salvage, environmental risk assessment and debris disposal.

Zodiac Maritime said the priority was to ensure crew safety and prevent marine pollution. It is worth mentioning that in 2012, the "Morning Midas" ship collided with the pilot ship in Australian waters, causing a pollution accident, and the previous ship was punished by Australia's maritime safety. As China's exports of new energy resources rise, such maritime hazards are attracting much attention.
