The world's largest container ship arrives in South Asia! Drifting in Vizhinjam Port due to congestion | Maritime Export Logistics

The world's largest container ship, MSC Irina, arrived at the anchorage outside the Vizhinjam International Port in India, which is its first stop at a port in South Asia. The ship is operated by the Swiss Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the world's largest container shipping company.

This ultra-large container vessel (ULCV) belongs to the Irina class and can carry 24,346 standard containers (20-foot equivalent units). It is the largest container ship in the world. The ship is 399.99 meters long, 61.3 meters wide, and can carry 240,739 tons in the summer. Its length is equivalent to four football fields, and the height of the container stack can reach 22 to 25 floors.

MSC Irina arrived at the outer anchorage of Vizhinjam on the night of June 3. Due to port congestion, it has not docked yet and is currently listed among six ships waiting to dock. It is expected to dock from June 6 to 8. After docking, the ship will handle about 4,000 containers. The port authorities said that during the docking period, the ship will shut down its engines and drift outside the port boundary, and the crew will conduct regular navigation observations and collision inspections.

Due to its large size, the MSC Irina requires four tugboats to assist when it docks, which is twice the usual number. The monsoon weather may pose some challenges for docking. After completing the two-day docking, the MSC Irina will continue to Spain.

The last port of call for the giant ship was Singapore, which departed from Singapore for Kerala, India on May 28. Since its trial operation and operation, the Vizhinjam port has handled about 720,000 standard containers. In this fiscal year alone, the port has managed 2.2 million standard containers. The docking of the MSC Irina has undoubtedly once again raised the port's profile.
