European ports in crisis! Maersk extends emergency measures until the end of May | Maritime export logistics

May 23,2025

Congestion in European ports is continuing to worsen, particularly in the port of Bremen, with labour restrictions being particularly acute and exceeding previous forecasts.

According to Jannik Amstutz, Senior Manager of German Shipping at Flexport, in the Europe Freight Market Update, the average congestion time is currently around five to six days, depending on the location. He also pointed out that despite good weather, the lack of Rain Water caused the Rhine River not to recover, which limited the use of barges, especially from Antwerp and Rotterdam.

Earlier this week, Danish shipping giant Maersk also said the port of Bremen had seen an unexpected sharp drop in labour availability after a number of holidays, including Easter, the Holy Spirit's Day and the Day of the Ascension.

Maersk warned that although seasonal changes had been taken into account, the scale of the labour reduction this year was still larger than expected. To mitigate disruption, Maersk has extended its emergency measures until the end of May, when the terminal's productivity is expected to return to normal levels.

As part of the emergency measures, Maersk's AE5 service will temporarily be extended from Bremerhaven to the Nordic terminal, with its route of Qingdao - Yantian - Danrong Parapas - London Gateway - Bremerhaven - Hamburg.

Bremen is not only an important hub for Maersk, but also a key trans-shipment point in the Gemini network linking the Maersk and Hapag-lloyd deep-sea routes with the Baltic and Scandinavian shuttle routes.

Jannik-Amstutz warned that it would be very difficult for European importers to find other ports to unload, with transit times becoming longer due to the situation in the Red Sea. At present, the alternatives available for ocean transport in northern Europe are very limited.
