Recently, the Hong Kong SAR Government News Network released a compelling press communiqué, which revealed a major change in the international trade policy of the United States government.
Since May 2, the U.S. government has eliminated the small tax-free arrangement for goods shipped from Hong Kong to the United States and has significantly increased the tariffs on shipments of goods shippable to the United Sates. This move undoubtedly has brought a huge impact on postal logistics between Hong Kong and the United States.
In response to the US's arbitrary, unreasonable and wanton abuse of tariffs, Hong Kong Post has responded swiftly, making clear that it will never collect the US' so-called tariff payments. Meanwhile, in response to the complex situation, Hong Kong Post announced it would suspend the receipt of mail containing goods to the United States. This decision is aimed at safeguarding the normality of Hong Kong Post's own operations and avoiding being caught up in the chaos caused by the unreasonable policies of the United States.
Specifically, in the area of postal mail, in order to reduce unnecessary delays and disputes, taking into account the long time required for shipping by sea, Hong Kong Post will effectively suspend the receipt of postal mail containing goods from today (April 16). If the public has sent a flat mail containing the goods before this time, However, due to the changes in US policy, it is not possible to pay shipments to the US smoothly. Hong Kong Post will also actively assume its responsibility, actively contact the senders, and arrange for returns and refunds in an orderly manner from April 22 to protect the rights and interests of the public.
In terms of empty mail operations, Hong Kong Post plans to suspend the receipt of empty messages containing goods from April 27. Here, I would like to remind all senders that if they still have an email demand for goods to the United States, they must make preparations in advance, because this unreasonable policy of the United States will likely face high and unreasonable costs. However, it is worth noting that mail containing only documents and no goods is not affected by this policy adjustment and can still be delivered normally.
In an in-depth analysis from a macro-foreign trade perspective, in the context of the current rapid changes in tariff levels, the order volume in the US market is most likely to show a straight downward trend in the coming period.
For the vast number of foreign trade practitioners, proactively developing direct access to other overseas markets outside the United States market has become the only viable path to get out of the difficult situation and achieve sustained business development. If we continue to hesitate and do not act immediately, we will no doubt be in a desperate situation in the fierce market competition of the future.
The "thunderstorm" caused by the changes in U.S. market policy in 2025 has set off a heavy wake-up call for all foreign traders. It profoundly shows that in conducting foreign trade business, all hopes and resources must not be concentrated in one market, and the classic business adage "You can't put your eggs in one basket" is especially important today.
At present, "independent development of foreign trade" and "expansion of diversified markets" have become an unstoppable trend. Those foreign trade practitioners who are overly dependent on the single market, especially the United States market, must quickly change their strategies and devote their energies to expanding into more national markets if they are to gain a foothold in the complex and volatile international trade environment and achieve sustainable development.
