Unexpected! Multiple containers fell into the sea! Maersk and ONE container ships collided

Mar 03,2025

On the evening of February 28, a collision occurred at Container Terminal 9 in Kwai Tsing, Hong Kong. According to video clips leaked by the media, a pink-hulled cargo ship allegedly collided with a blue-hulled cargo ship loaded with containers, causing at least three containers to fall into the sea. The pink cargo ship then slowly backed away, while some containers on the blue cargo ship were damaged.

The pink cargo ship belongs to the Japanese shipping company ONE and arrived at the port of Shenzhen Chuanwan; the blue cargo ship is suspected to be a ship owned by Maersk.

At that time, the blue cargo ship was docked at the dock for unloading, and the bow (the front part of the ship) of the pink cargo ship accidentally collided with the right side of the blue cargo ship, causing three containers to fall into the sea. A 2-meter-long and 2-meter-high hole appeared in the bow of the pink cargo ship.

The Marine Department received the notification at about 8:40 a.m. on February 28 and immediately dispatched personnel to the scene to investigate. All three overboard containers have been recovered, and there were no casualties or oil spill. The Marine Department is currently following up on the incident.

After the accident, the relevant departments acted quickly and successfully lifted three containers that had fallen into the sea back to the shore, minimizing the impact of the accident on port operations.

The two cargo ships involved in the incident were large in size. The "CLIFFORD MAERSK" was a 10,000-container-class container ship, while the "ONE COLUMBIA" was a cargo container ship from the Port of Shekou, Shenzhen. Neither of the two ships suffered serious damage after the accident, and they left Hong Kong one after another to continue their original voyage.

The Hong Kong Maritime Department has fully taken over the investigation of the accident, and will thoroughly investigate the cause of the accident through a variety of technical means, including reviewing the ship's navigation data, on-site investigation, and questioning the crew, and will promptly publicize the progress of the investigation.

This collision accident has sounded the alarm for the safety of port shipping, highlighting the importance of port operation safety management. The relevant departments will take this opportunity to further strengthen port safety management and prevent similar accidents from happening again.
