The country has declared a state of disaster emergency! Curfew, flight cancellations, and the capital is plunged into darkness...

Feb 27,2025

On February 25, a large-scale power outage occurred in Chile, plunging the capital Santiago and most of the country into darkness. The Chilean government quickly declared a "state of disaster emergency" and a "curfew." The scope of the power outage was extremely wide, affecting more than 19 million people, or more than 98% of the population, making it the worst mass power outage in Chile in 15 years.

Cause of power outage and progress of restoration

The operator of the Chilean national power system reported that at 15:16 on the 25th, a fault occurred in the 500 kV transmission system in the northern region, resulting in the interruption of power supply from Arica in the north to Los Lagos in the south. The Chilean national power system has launched a service restoration plan, and power supply to about 4 million households has been restored, but it will take time to fully restore power supply and the power supply situation is still unstable.

Multiple industries are affected.

Chile is the world's largest producer of copper ore, and the power outage has led to the suspension of operations in the northern copper belt, causing fluctuations in international copper prices. The power outage occurred at the Escondida copper mine, the world's largest copper mine, and all mines owned by the Chilean National Copper Corporation were affected. In addition, the power outage also affected various fields such as public transportation, network communication, emergency services, and hospitals. The Santiago Metro service was suspended, traffic lights were closed, and traffic was chaotic. LaTam Airlines canceled some flights, and large-scale entertainment activities were suspended.

Emergency response by the government

The Ministry of Interior of Chile is deploying armed forces nationwide to help maintain order. Major hospitals have activated generators, and the national medical system is operating normally. The Chilean government said it will restore power as soon as possible and continue to investigate the cause of the power outage.
