Is Trump too superstitious to announce a change in the date of imposing tariffs?

Feb 17,2025

According to foreign media reports such as the New York Times, on February 14, US President Trump announced plans to impose tariffs on imported cars around April 2. He did not disclose specific details or target countries, but Japan's Kyodo News Agency analyzed that Japanese, German, and South Korean automakers may be affected.

Trump said in the Oval Office that he originally planned to implement it on April 1, but he was "a bit superstitious," so he postponed it to April 2. He said that a lot of money was lost on that day, but he still decided to do it.

Previously, Trump has introduced a number of trade measures affecting the automotive industry. On February 10, he signed a document imposing a 25% tariff on all imported steel and aluminum from the United States, which will take effect on March 12. Canada, Germany, Japan, and other allies of the United States oppose this policy, believing that it will undermine the multilateral trading system, hinder economic development, and cause losses to all parties.

In addition, on February 13, Trump announced the imposition of "reciprocal tariffs" due to the long-term unfair treatment of American exports of automobiles in foreign markets, such as the EU imposing a 10% tariff on imported automobiles from the United States, while the United States only imposes a 2.5% tariff on imported automobiles from Europe.

Trump's import car tariff plan has undoubtedly brought great uncertainty to the global automotive industry and the international trade pattern. How will the trade relations between the United States and other countries develop in the future? How will the automotive industry respond to this challenge? These questions have become the focus of global attention.
