This weekend, the 18th summit of the leaders of the Group of Twenty (G20) ended in New Delhi, India.

Is India changing its name?

While paying attention to the content of the G20 summit, many media have noticed that in the guest dinner invitation letter issued by Indian Prime Minister Modi's government, the word Bharat ("Bharat", also translated as "Bharado") was used to replace the name of India (India). Indian President Murmu was called "President Bharat", which triggered people's speculation that the name of India will be officially changed.

Coincidentally, when the spokesperson of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party shared the news about Prime Minister Modi's trip to Indonesia to participate in the "India-ASEAN Summit" on the 7th, he also used "Prime Minister Bharat" instead of "Prime Minister of India".

What is Bharat?

Bharat is an ancient Sanskrit word that literally means "to carry, to carry," and actually means "one who seeks light, knowledge". India has historically been called "Bharat", which means "seeker of light and knowledge".

The official languages of India are Hindi and English, which is called India in English and Bharat (Bharat) in Hindi.

The word has multiple meanings, can refer to the Indian subcontinent, can also refer to the legendary kings of ancient India, the Borneo tribe and so on. In the Constitution of India, the terms "Bharat" and "India" are used interchangeably as the two official names of the state of India.

In the view of Hindu nationalists, the word "Bharat" can highlight the long history of Indian civilization, especially Hinduism. Compared with "India", "Bharat" has obvious Hindu color.

Recently, according to a number of Indian media reports,The Indian government may formally put forward a proposal to change the English name of India to Bharat (Bharat) at a special session of parliament to be held from September 18 to 22 and consider it at the meeting.

In this regard, "India Today" and other Indian media said that the call to change the English name of India to "Bharat" by amending the constitution has intensified. According to the constitution, the Indian government must obtain simple majority support in both houses of parliament to start the renaming work.

Recently, India's "Economic Times" stated that a number of dignitaries, including the Chief Minister of Assam, have voiced support on social media for changing the English name of India to "Bharat".

Officials from Modi's right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) support the name change. They believe the name India was introduced by the British colonists as a "symbol of slavery". Britain ruled India for about 200 years until India gained independence in 1947.

"Our country is called Bharat, there is no doubt about that." India's Information Technology Minister Rajeev Chandraseka (Rajeev Chandrasekhar) said.

We should not abandon India"

However, some opponents are critical of the change.

In response to the Indian government's claim to change the name of the country, the main opposition National Congress Party strongly criticized it, especially accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party government of distorting history, dividing India, and suppressing the opposition party.

Earlier in July, the Congress Party and other opposition parties set up a grand coalition called "India's National Development and Inclusive Alliance" with an eye on the 2024 Indian general election. Its English acronym is INDIA.

In addition, the leader of the Communist Party of India also stated that he "does not understand why the authorities hate the word 'India' so much". The Bharatiya Janata Party, on the other hand, attacked the Congress Party and others, and its ideological parent, the National Volunteer Group, also said that "Bharat" should be used instead of "India" on all occasions, and that changing the name would change people's minds accordingly.

"While there is no constitutional objection to calling India 'Bharat, 'which is one of the country's two official names, I hope the government is not foolish enough to abandon 'India' altogether because 'India' has accumulated an incalculable brand value over the centuries." Opposition MP Shashi Tharoor (ShashiTharoor) said on X (former Twitter).

Some political analysts said that this is an ingenious creation designed to challenge the nationalist platform of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Professor Singh of Brown University said: "It is not the first time that the Modi government has changed its name. From streets, gardens and even entire cities, they have tried (to change its name), and these actions have already cost Indian taxpayers millions of dollars. Why change its name now? I think it has little to do with the G20 summit, mainly with the approach to the election."

Whether or not the Bharatiya Janata Party will formally move to change the country's name in Parliament, India's Hindu nationalism is getting stronger and stronger, and the principle of "secularism" stipulated in the Indian Constitution seems to be getting farther and farther away. This clearly deserves the attention of the international community, including neighboring countries and distant countries.
