In the face of tariff shocks, China's exports of apparel to the United States hit a 22-year low in May | Maritime export logistics

The latest statistics show that the total value of Chinese garment imports to the United States hit a record low in May this year in 22 years, a phenomenon that profoundly reflects the heavy blow of the high tariff policy of the United States to Chinese garment exports.

Reuters reports that China has long been the largest supplier of apparel to the United States. However, the share of Chinese apparel in the US is shrinking as the trade relationship between China and the US continues to be strained.

In April, U.S. President Donald Trump sharply increased tariffs on Chinese apparel products to a maximum of 145 percent, a move that directly prompted a growing number of U.S retailers to reduce purchases from China and instead seek alternative supply chains in places like Vietnam, Bangladesh and India.

According to the United States International Trade Commission (UITC), the total value of clothing imported from China in May was $556 million (about 4 billion yuan), down sharply from $796 million in April and the fourth consecutive month of decline. The figure was the lowest monthly record since May 2003.

University of Delaware fashion and clothing research professor Lu Sheng (transliteration, Sheng Lu) analysis that the sharp decline in the total value of the United States imports from China is not the result of natural market fluctuations. Despite the previous trade agreement between China and the United States in London, Lu said most mainstream U.S. clothing brands still plan to further reduce their reliance on the Chinese market, and even consider pulling out of the Chinese market altogether.

In addition, data from third party audit firm QIMA also shows that in the second quarter of 2025, the United States from China procurement volume decreased by nearly a quarter compared to the same period of last year, while procurement demand from Southeast Asia increased 29%.
