On July 9, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump took to social media platforms to issue a series of messages targeting Brunei, Tariff letters from eight countries - Algeria, Moldova, Iraq, the Philippines, Libya, Sri Lanka and Brazil - declare that the United States will impose high tariffs on some of these countries' products from August 1, 2025, including a 25 percent tariff on Brunei and Moldova. Tariffs of 30 percent are imposed on Algeria, Iraq, Libya, Sri Lanka and 20 percent on the Philippines, while Brazil faces tariffs of up to 50 percent, making it the highest rate of tariffs among the 24 countries Trump has announced so far.

Brazil's vice president and minister of development, industry, trade and services, Gerardo Alcamin, responded that Trump's move was unfair and would damage the US economy. "The United States has a trade surplus with Brazil, and 80 percent of U.S. exports to Brazil enjoy zero tariff treatment," he said.

On the news, the Brazilian real widened its intraday loss to 2 percent against the dollar, and Brazilian-related stocks overall weakened, with Petrobras down nearly 2 percent and Vale down 1.35 percent.

Trump had previously announced tariffs of 10 per cent on the UK and 20 per cent on Vietnam. With the eight countries announced this time, 14 countries have already been included in Trump's tariff landscape:

Japan, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Malaysia: 25%

South Africa, Bosnia and Herzegovina: 30%

Laos, Myanmar: 40%

Indonesia: 32 per cent

Bangladesh, Serbia: 35 per cent

Cambodia, Thailand: 36 per cent

Tunisia: 25%
