The ship was built in 1997 and had a capacity of 1,730 standard containers. At that time, it was sailing from the port of Visakhapatnam, India, to Kochi. It sent a distress signal due to trouble. The Indian Navy aircraft rushed to the scene for emergency rescue.

The MSC ELSA 3, flying the Liberian flag, was 184 meters long and had 640 containers at the time of the incident, of which 13 were dangerous goods containers and 12 were filled with caustic soda. Caustic soda is used in the chemical industry to produce acetylene and calcium cyanamide. Its main component, calcium carbide, reacts with water to produce flammable gas acetylene and calcium hydroxide.
The Indian Navy said that all 24 crew members, who were from Georgia, Russia, Ukraine, and the Philippines, were rescued and successfully transferred to a safe area by the Indian Coast Guard and naval patrol boats.
In view of the sensitivity of marine ecosystems along the coast of Kerala, the Indian Coast Guard has initiated the highest level of pollution emergency response mechanism to deal with possible pollution risks.
According to MSC's official shipping schedule, "MSC ELSA 3" serves the Indian regional route and is responsible for cargo transfer and connection between major ports in India.
