US line large cabinet in June or "break ten thousand!" Foreign trade enterprises urgently seize the cabin, shipping companies "price alliance" harvest peak season | Maritime export logistics
May 20,2025

Since mid-May, the volume of container bookings for the US Line has soared by 277 per cent in a short period of time. Many foreign trade companies are planning ahead to lock in spaces in June and July, a move that directly drives the rapid increase in spot freight prices.
According to the analysis, June to July is likely to be the peak period of shipping. Considering the approximately 20-day shipping cycle of the US-Spain route, the tariff window period undoubtedly further stimulated the market's demand for cargo.

Drewry, a shipping data provider, expects current freight costs in the Pacific to rise next week because of a capacity shortage. Freight rates from Shanghai to New York rose 19%, or $704, to $4,350 per 40-foot container, according to the latest edition of the WCI index. Freight rates from Shanghai to Los Angeles jumped 16 percent, or $423, to $3,136 per 40-foot container.

According to publicly available shipping company price increase notices and industry analysis reports, U.S. container freight prices will show a significant upward trend in June 2025. French shipping giant Delta Air Lines has informed customers that container freight rates will rise significantly, a source in the industry has revealed.
The cost of shipping a 40-foot crate will soar to $10,000 after mid-June, according to the latest news. Delta Ships' rate notice to customers shows that from June 1 to 14, for example, freight rates for 40-square-foot cabinets will increase to $6,100 for Southwest and $7,100 for East. From June 15, the peak season surcharge from Asia (including the Far East) to the port of discharge in the United States and Canada will be increased by another $4,000.
That means shipping costs for a 40-foot chest of goods will hit a record high of $10,000 after mid-June for foreign trade companies desperate to ship goods to the United States.
Some freight forwarders also confirmed the rising price trend. They said that currently the latest offer from Delta Air Lines is $3,000 to $3,200 for the Southwest and about $4,000 to $4,200 for Eastern. However, freight rates are expected to rise by about $1,000 by the end of May, with a further $1,000 to $2,000 more likely in June.
The price increase in line with market rules, other shipping companies such as Mason, Mediterranean Shipping, Hapag-lloyd, Evergreen also have varying degrees of freight increases, some routes rose over 50%.

According to freight forwarders, the ship company has controlled the supply of cabins through such means as "alliance shift reduction" and "cross-line capacity transfer," further exacerbating the contradiction between supply and demand. "Customers are now not asking for a price, but 'can they book a cabin', and price sensitivity is significantly reduced."
With the accelerated increase in container shipping prices for the US line, foreign trade enterprises are under the dual pressure of "one container is difficult to find" and a surge in costs. Many foreign trade enterprises have responded that the current U.S. shipping capacity is extremely tight, and in order to ship goods to the United States before the tariff policy adjustment, they have had to work overtime to resume production and rush to book spaces.
The head of a foreign trade business in Zhejiang province revealed: "Our order for shipments originally planned for June must now be brought forward to the end of May, otherwise it may not be ready for shipment."
Although it will take a week or two for ships to repatriate capacity from other routes, and the capacity gap may gradually ease in mid-to-late June, a combination of high season surcharges is likely to keep freight prices high.
