Attention! Maersk and CMA CGM impose PSS on China-Africa routes | Marine Export Logistics
May 08,2025

Maersk announced that as of May 19, cargo departing from mainland China and Hong Kong, China to the port of Dares Salaam in Kenya and Tanzania will be subject to a new peak season surcharge (PSS). The specific fee standards are as follows:
To Kenya: Dry cargo containers and refrigerated containers cost $1,000 per standard container (TEU) and $1,400 per large container (FEU), respectively.
To the port of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: The cost of dry cargo containers and refrigerated containers is USD 950 per standard container (TEU) and USD 1350 per large container (FEU), respectively.
CMA CGM also announced that as of May 1 and until further notice, a peak season surcharge (PSS) will be levied on cargo departing from China (including mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau) to Nigeria. This adjustment applies only to dry cargo containers and the surcharge is USD 100 per standard container (TEU).
These adjustments reflect the shipping companies' preparations to meet the demand during the upcoming peak season. During the peak season, shipping companies usually charge peak season surcharges to cover the increase in operating costs due to the increased demand for cargo transportation. The adjustments made by Maersk and CMA CGM are part of their strategies to balance market demand with operating costs.
