Oleg Kuper, the governor of the Odessa region, spoke up urgently to give details of the attack: the Panama flag of the Mediterranean shipping company,The MSC Levante F, a container ship owned by a European company, and the Super Sarkas, a bulk ship with 21,000 tons of corn and soybeans, managed by Thor of Türkiye, were also damaged. Two port workers were injured and taken to hospital. The port and ship authorities have not released details of the cargo and damage, and the companies involved have not responded.

Kipper stressed with concern that this is not the first time the port of Odessa has been hit, with a similar tragedy as far back as October 2024. And behind this attack lies a larger geopolitical game. The Ukrainian media Doomskaya quoted military experts as saying that Russia intended to deter European shipping giants and pressure them to cut or even terminate their operations on Ukrainian routes.

In fact, since last June, MSC, Maersk, Hapag-lloyd, CMA and other shipping giants have returned to Ukraine, trying to restart the trade channel. But now the situation has taken a dramatic turn for the worse. As a major exporter of cereals, Ukraine relies on Black Sea ports for export of about 6 million tons of cereals per month.

Since the outbreak of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, from the blocking of the original Black Sea grain trade to the unilateral termination of the deal last year, Kiev has struggled to open new trade paths but has struggling to conceal crises. Ships on the Black Sea route are frequently threatened, mines drifting are making matters worse, and international shipping is wobbly in the whirlpool of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, and the future is fraught with uncertainty.
