U.S. pressure! Demand that Mexico impose tariffs on Chinese goods!

Feb 25,2025

The U.S. government is putting pressure on Mexico to impose tariffs on imports from China in exchange for the removal of U.S tariffs against Mexico, Bloomberg reported on Feb. 23. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnik conveyed the message during talks with the Mexican delegation on the 20th.

Bloomberg reports

Mexico has not yet made a commitment

Despite this request from the United States, Mexico has yet to make any commitments to the United States. The two countries have agreed to set up a working group to continue discussions on trade and tariffs. Mexico's Minister of Economy Marcelo
· Mr Ebrard said the Washington meeting was the start of a "constructive dialogue" and that joint work would begin on the 24.

Background of U.S. Tariff Policy

local time
On February 1, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order announcing 25 percent tariffs on Mexico and Canada and 10 percent tariff on China. The move is intended to force Mexico and Canada to do more to limit illegal immigration and drugs entering the United States. However, Trump said on February 3 that the tariffs on Mexico and Canada would be delayed for a month to allow for continued negotiations.

Mexico's response

Mexico's tax administration has previously introduced a new tariff policy that imposes on goods delivered from countries that do not have a relevant international treaty with Mexico.
A uniform tariff of 19%. This policy came into effect on January 1 this year and may be targeting China's popular online retailers, Temu and Shein. The move may have sent some sort of cryptic message to Trump, but it could also be an attempt to bolster domestic industrial development.

The next steps for the United States and Mexico

Distance from U.S. levy on Mexico
With less than ten days left until the 25 percent tariffs take effect (March 4), the U.S. is putting pressure on Mexico at this point. How will Mexico choose? How will trade relations between the two countries develop? We will continue to monitor the progress of this incident.
