Maersk Received Hussey Armed Threat Email!
Nov 28,2024
Recently, a number of Danish shipping companies, including Maersk, and the Danish Shipping Employers Association (Danish Shipping) Confirmed receipt of a threatening email from the Houthis in Yemen. The Houthis have launched frequent armed attacks on international merchant ships in the Red Sea over the past year.ShippingWatchIt confirmed that several threatening emails had been received, but did not disclose the number of employees affected.
The Danish Shipping Employers Association said the threatening mail was not an individual case. Maersk,Uni-TankersDanish shipping companies, as well as German shipping companies such as Hapburg-Lloyd, have been attacked by Houthi forces in the past year.
The Houthis warned that if the Danish shipping company continues to provide services to Israeli ports, its ships will be placed on the "ban list". The email clearly stated that these ships will be prohibited from crossing the Red Sea, the Bab Mandab Strait, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean, and may be directly attacked from any location deemed appropriate by the Houthis. Association of German Shipowners (VDR) also reported that in recent months, a number of German shipping companies have also received threatening emails from the Houthis.
International Shipping Union (ITF) also received a similar threatening email similar to the one sent to the Danish shipping company.ITFHas taken the initiative to contact the Houthi armed forces, asked the specific content of the ban. The Houthis responded that the ban covers all ships crossing the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea.
The Houthi threat is linked to the group's support for Palestine. Last year11Since January, Houthi armed forces have repeatedly launched attacks on merchant ships entering and leaving the Red Sea, especially merchant ships passing through the area. The Houthis have made clear that any shipment of goods involving Israel will face serious consequences. This threat has led many international shipping companies to bypass southern Africa instead of the Red Sea.
Due to the ongoing threat from the Houthis, the Red Sea, an important international shipping lane, is no longer the preferred route for merchant ships. Many shipping companies have adjusted their routes to bypass southern Africa to avoid passing through Houthi-controlled waters. This change has greatly affected the shipping of the Red Sea and brought new uncertainties to the global supply chain.
Since last year11Since April, Houthi attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea have become a major security risk for the global shipping industry. As the situation continues to be tense, how shipping companies and international organizations will respond to this challenge still needs further attention. Although traffic in the Mandeb Strait has dropped by about 60% year-on-year, experts believe that "the Red Sea channel will definitely not be closed," and some ships are still not intimidated by the threat of Houthi forces.
