Trump won! How big is the shipping industry?
Nov 07,2024

With Trump claiming victory in the US presidential election, the global logistics industry is facing new challenges and opportunities. Trump's policy positions, from energy to tariffs, from auto logistics to tax reform, will have a profound impact on the logistics industry.
Trump's energy policies could put the focus back on oil production, which is expected to lead to lower oil prices. This change will give a boost to the domestic trucking market, while reducing inflationary pressures, pushing interest rates down faster and stimulating consumer demand. It has a positive impact on the domestic logistics industry, especially in the fields of truck transportation, rail transportation, intermodal transportation, parcels and warehousing.
One of Trump's key promises is to impose high tariffs on foreign imports, especially Chinese imports. That could lead to manufacturing coming back to the United States, or sourcing goods from Mexico. Tariffs will push up prices for consumers and manufacturers, in contrast to deflationary pressures from lower oil prices and deregulation. S. warehousing and European regional logistics, but not for shipping, air freight and international freight forwarding.

The U.S. automotive logistics industry will benefit from Trump's policies, especially the postponement of the electric vehicle transition. Manufacturing internal combustion engine vehicles requires more logistics services than electric vehicles, so Trump's policies may help maintain the production scale of internal combustion engine vehicles.
Trump plans to cut or eliminate a variety of taxes, including corporate taxes on domestic manufacturing, as well as tax cuts on machinery, equipment and research and development. This will boost domestic growth and employment and have a positive impact on the domestic logistics sector.
Trump has promised to reduce the burden of regulations, which will help reduce business operating costs, have a positive impact on inflation, and be a huge stimulus to the domestic economy.

Trump's stance on climate change policy could pull out of the Paris climate agreement and eliminate green energy subsidies, which would hinder progress on a global carbon reduction agreement. His energy policies would lower the cost of oil, making the transition to diesel cars more difficult.
Trump vowed in his victory speech to end the war, and the implications for Ukraine and the Middle East are unclear. But some kind of solution will undoubtedly have an impact on oil and gas prices, which in turn will drive down global energy costs.

The biggest winners from Trump's election will be U.S. trucking and other domestic logistics services. However, international shipping, aviation and freight forwarders could be the losers. But it must be pointed out that if the US economy grows strongly, this will become the driving force for the growth of the logistics industry. The logistics industry needs to pay close attention to the implementation and changes of Trump's policies to deal with the challenges and opportunities that may arise.
Driven by the adjustment of global trade policy, the re-layout of supply chain, the transfer of shipping demand, the fluctuation of transportation cost and the new challenges of shipping safety, the global shipping industry will face a series of challenges and opportunities.
