Air cargo services hit hard: normal strike is coming?

Feb 20,2024

The strike by Lufthansa Cargo on the evening of the 19th is expected to seriously affect a "large number" of cargo flights to and from Germany, and may evolve into a normal state.

The union has called on Lufthansa's ground crew to strike again from 8 p.m. on February 19 to 7: 10 a.m. on February 21. Just two weeks ago, Lufthansa Cargo experienced a strike.

Dennis Dacke, the head of the crew union, said in an interview: "After the last negotiation, Lufthansa gave a'special and better offer', but for us, this is just a change of medicine."

"From the company's point of view, this is not a good proposal. Therefore, we decided to go on strike and 99% of the members agreed to another warning strike action."

Lufthansa Cargo has informed its customers that it will publish an emergency flight plan on its website today, warning that hubs such as Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, Berlin and Dusseldorf, Cologne and Stuttgart will all be affected.

The company stated: "Regarding the affected goods and contracts, we would like to emphasize that these are special circumstances and we will contact you in a timely manner."

In addition to flight delays and cancellations, Lufthansa has imposed three temporary restrictions. The Frankfurt hub will suspend operating road feeder services during the strike. At the same time, from noon on the 19th until the end of the strike, Frankfurt will ban the transport of dangerous goods and ornamental fish. At Munich airport, the import of animals and ornamental fish is also prohibited.

German unions are due to hold the next round of talks with Lufthansa on Wednesday, demanding a 12.5 percent increase in basic wages and other conditions. If negotiations are fruitless, there could be more strikes in the future.

Dennis Dacke revealed: "If they don't give us a very, very good offer, we will continue to strike. This is a clear signal to Lufthansa's management that our request is justified and that we need the money. If you look at Lufthansa's balance sheet, they 've gained quite a bit over the last few yearsEBITWhy not meet our demands?"

Christine Behle, vice-chairman of Ver.di, said: "This is our collective bargaining response to 20 years of deregulation and wage dumping at airports. The acute shortage of workers is also caused by poor working conditions. With its attractive conditions, the new sectoral collective agreements can help ground service jobs become more attractive again."

In fact, just two months ago, Lufthansa reported an "extraordinary shortage of staff". The airline told customers: "We deeply apologize for the necessary adjustments and inconvenience caused, and thank you for your understanding and cooperation during the strike."
