The second largest port in Europe in 2023

Due to geopolitical tensions, slowing economic growth and declining industrial production and trade flows, the port of Bruges, Antwerp, Europe's second largest port, saw a decline in cargo traffic in 2023, with port cargo throughput of 0.271 billion tons, down 5.5 percent year-on-year, and container throughput 12.5 million TEU, down 7.2 percent year-on-year.

However, as a result of the consolidation, the market share of the container business at the Port of Bruges in Antwerp rose to 30.2 per cent and rose to 0.6 per cent compared to other ports within the Hamburg-Le Havre range.

In 2023, the port's liquid bulk throughput fell by 2.1 per cent. Due to the strong growth of diesel and gasoline, fuel throughput increased, while gasoline and fuel throughput decreased significantly. Naphtha throughput declined and LNG throughput remained consistent due to lower industry demand. Due to high energy, raw materials and labor costs and low demand, the entire European chemical industry is under pressure. This resulted in a 8.1% decrease in chemical throughput.

Traditional bulk throughput returned to pre-epidemic levels. Total throughput decreased by 18.8 percent compared to 2022. Due to the decline in European steel production and demand, the throughput of steel, the main product in traditional groceries, fell by 16.9. The total volume of ro-ro transport was relatively good, falling by 2.1 per cent. Dry bulk shipments fell 13.9 percent year-on-year. In 2022, coal demand rose due to energy issues, but then fell sharply.

In order to ensure its strategic position as a world port in the future, the port has made sustainable growth its top priority and plans to implement major investment plans in the next 10 years. The Port of Bruges in Antwerp plans to invest € 2.9 billion million over the next 10 years in the construction of new infrastructure such as the Europa Terminal quay, the new coordination center and the remaining land on the left bank.
