Withdrawal of strike notice! Port operations still need time to resume, foreign trade delivery attention →

Jul 22,2023

Canadian Pacific dockers rescind strike notice after Trudeau crisis meeting, Reuters reported.

On July 19, 2023, the International Terminal and Warehouse Union (ILWU) issued a new 72-hour strike notice in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, where containers were put on hold after a strike by dockworkers along the Pacific Coast.

After Prime Minister Justin Trudeau directed a crisis meeting to seek all options to ensure supply chain stability, the International Terminals and Warehouses Union of Canada (ILWU) posted on its website on Wednesday that "the notice of strike at 9:00 am on July 22 has now been removed with immediate effect".

In a statement released after the meeting, the prime minister's office said Trudeau stressed the critical importance of resuming port operations as soon as possible and said workers and employers across Canada must not face further disruption.

"He asked ministers and senior officials about proposals to achieve this and directed them to pursue all available options to ensure the stability of our supply chain and protect Canadian jobs and the economy," the statement said."

Some 7,500 dockworkers have picketed the two ports almost nonstop since July 1, and the employers' association has accused the union of "hijacking the Canadian economy".The strike disrupted operations in Vancouver and Prince Rupert, two of Canada's three busiest ports and key gateways for exporting natural resources and commodities and importing raw materials.

According to the Canadian manufacturers and exporters industry body to interrupt the daily trade volume of about 0.5 billion Canadian dollars, the strike is expected to lead to the port cargo traffic disruption of 6.5 billion Canadian dollars.

Although the strike is canceled, this does not mean that these port operations can be resumed immediately. It may take 3 to 4 weeks or even months to clean up the accumulated containers in this port. Please be careful with shipments.

Given the congestion at these major ports in Canada, the editor reminds:Shippers and forwarders who have recently traded with Canada pay close attention to the development of the situation, arrange shipment plans reasonably, and pay attention to the impact of port congestion on the delay of cargo transportation and customs clearance.
