US: Slow recovery of import volume, less than last year | Maritime export logistics

The Port of Los Angeles is one of the busiest ports in the United States, with major customers including large retailers such as Walmart and parts suppliers for automakers such as Ford.

With the suspension of some additional tariffs between China and the United States, the import volume of the Port of Los Angeles is expected to gradually rise from about 69,000 TEU in late May to 106,000 TEU in mid-June, but the port manager pointed out that this level is still 9.4% lower than the same period last year and has not yet recovered to the original level.

According to a report by CCTV News, the U.S. Cable News Network said that although the port management expected tariff benefits, the drastic fluctuation of the U.S. government's tariff policy made it difficult for goods to return to the port immediately.

At present, the import volume of US ports has not recovered to the original level. In the coming months, the US market may face problems such as insufficient product supply, limited choices for the public, and rising living costs.

The head of the Port of Los Angeles also mentioned that the traditional shipping season is approaching, but the port business is showing a weak trend. Cargo volume fell by 30% in the first and fourth weeks of May, and it is expected that cargo volume will decline by double digits in May. This may affect port employment, as the reduction in cargo ships will reduce the demand for unloading and shipping workers. According to data from the U.S. Retail Association, U.S. imports are expected to decline by at least 20% in the second half of 2025.
