Heavy news! The United States has canceled the exemption of small parcel tariffs on China, and many areas have been hit | Maritime export logistics
May 04,2025

On May 2, the United States officially canceled the tariff exemption policy for small packages (worth less than 800 US dollars) from China. This adjustment triggered a chain reaction at many levels, including American consumers, small and medium-sized enterprises and e-commerce platforms.
After the implementation of the policy, product prices rose significantly, and the prices of some e-commerce products even doubled. The complexity of the customs process led to a longer shipping time, causing widespread dissatisfaction among consumers on social media platforms.
According to a report by the US Consumer Research Institute in April, this policy may cause businesses and consumers to lose about $47 billion annually. Low-income groups are particularly affected because their living costs are closely related to these affordable cross-border e-commerce goods.
In response to the tariff policy, some e-commerce platforms have reorganized their logistics systems and raised their prices, while accelerating the pace of building local warehouses in the United States. Some foreign brands have stopped shipping to the United States, and some small and medium-sized enterprises have no choice but to withdraw from the US market.
The Wall Street Journal reported that in the 2024 fiscal year alone, about 1.36 billion small packages entered the United States, most of which came from cross-border e-commerce platforms in China. The cancellation of the tariff exemption policy not only failed to achieve the expected effect, but also brought significant negative effects to the United States in terms of economy and people's livelihood.
