Suddenly, a container ship of MSC, a large number of containers collapsed and fell into the water.

Mar 24,2025

On March 20 local time, the "MSC Houston V" container ship under the Mediterranean Shipping (MSC), The maritime "giant" which runs between the Mediterranean and many parts of Europe was sailing along the NWC UKTO / FROM GREECE route from the Greek port of Piraeus towards Liverpool, England, at full speed on the NC509R mission, carrying numerous trade hopes.

Who would have expected that the calm was suddenly broken when we reached the sea off the coast of Portugal's Cape de Saint Vincent. "Martineau" storm with 48 knots of wind and waves hit, like a tyrannical sea monster, "MSC-Houston-V" opened its mouth.

In a flash, the ship was in chaos. At least 15 containers, like broken kites, were relentlessly swept into the abyss of the sea, and a shocking scene appeared on the right side of the stern: several containers were crumbling, dangling off the side of the ship, as if they would fall completely into the waves in the next second. The disaster was not limited to the fact that the container stacks also collapsed under the fierce winds, like bricks that had been knocked down.

Fortunately, the crew was well trained and activated the emergency plan, immediately disrupted the scheduled voyage, made a difficult turn the next day, ran for safety at full speed to the Spanish port of Vigo, and finally stopped at the Terminavi terminal. Now, in a frightened state, it anchors there quietly, undergoing a "big test" by the Spanish maritime authorities and the classification society.

On the one hand, the staff, like detective, conducted a "carpet search" of the hull structure and cargo binding system to try to identify the culprits behind the accident. The first signs are heartening. Some of the container fixtures collapsed under the extreme ripping of the storm. Could a fault be planted during the bonding or an omission in the loading process?

On the other hand, ships' decisions in the face of extreme weather are also being questioned - why did they fail to adjust their routes ahead of time to avoid storm centers and whether the cargo was adequately reinforced. At the same time, the search for the sinking container is unremitting, and relevant departments must pay close attention to its impact on the marine environment, which cannot tolerate too much fuss.

The fate of the Portuguese flagged MSC Houston V, built in 2010 with a capacity of 4,432 TEU, backed by the Steamship-Mutual Shipowners Mutual Insurance Association, involves many stakeholders.

This accident is like a heavy hammer, which has woken the alarm bells of the shipping industry in many aspects such as extreme weather response and cargo safety and security, and the subsequent developments deserve to be followed by everyone who follows the maritime trade.
