Sudden! European multi-country port strike, Maersk emergency alert: ship schedule delays

Jun 19,2024

On June 17, cargo and container handling in Germany's main seaports was at a near standstill. As the deadlock in the negotiation of the labor agreement could not be broken, the German Verdi (Verdi) union decided on Monday to launch a warning strike to convey their demands to the employers.

At 5 a.m. on the 17th, the strike officially began. The first to be hit were Hamburg and Bremen, Germany's two main container ports. As the strike spread, the ports of Bremerhaven, Blake and Emden also joined the strike. These ports are important nodes of the German and even European trade networks, and the stagnation of their operations has undoubtedly put great pressure on the entire logistics chain.

Under the influence of the strike, the port traffic came to a standstill. From the photos released by the media, it can be seen that the originally busy port has become empty and silent, with only a few trucks lined up on the bridge leading to the port of Hamburg, as if silently telling the helplessness of the strike. Rail freight companies also warned that the backlog of services caused by the strike would have a serious impact on the movement of goods.

The strike focused on a dispute between labor and management over wages and benefits. The Verdi union insisted on a three-euro hourly wage increase from June 1 and an increase in shift allowances to improve the treatment of workers. However, the Central Association of German Seaports proposed a relatively low increase, proposing a 2.5 per cent increase in hourly wages from June 1, as well as a similar increase in shift allowances. The proposal clearly failed to meet the union's expectations, leading to a stalemate in the negotiations.

On the 17th, global shipping giant Maersk issued an emergency warning to customers, pointing out that due to the strike action in major German seaports, its shipping network is expected to be widely affected. According to Maersk's assessment, several original sailing plans will be disrupted and delayed due to the strike, especially on Finnish services, which may be more significantly affected.

In the face of this unfavorable situation, Maersk said it will take a series of measures to deal. Consideration is being given to changing the route of the ship or reducing the call to minimize the impact on subsequent shipping schedule, thereby minimizing the delay of customer cargo. This flexible strategy will help Maersk maintain some operational efficiency during the strike, while also working to safeguard the interests of customers.

However, even if the strike ends, Maersk expects the terminal could face congestion on container deliveries and withdrawals once it resumes operations. The main reason is that the backlog of goods and containers during the strike needs to be processed in a timely manner, and the handling capacity of the terminal may be limited.

Therefore, Maersk recommends that customers be prepared and communicate with relevant departments in advance to ensure the smooth delivery and withdrawal of goods.

In addition, shippers in the Nordic region are also facing another heavy pressure. Labor tensions are also rising in France, with unions representing dockworkers and other port workers already staging several one-day strikes and multiple four-hour stoppages this month, according to media reports. These strike actions not only affected the operational efficiency of French ports, but also further increased the pressure on Nordic shippers. The need to face a more complex logistics environment and uncertainties to ensure the timely transportation and delivery of goods.

Overall, the strike action in Germany and labor tensions in France have brought considerable challenges to the global shipping and logistics industry. Shipping companies and shippers need to pay close attention to these changes and take appropriate measures to deal with potential risks and challenges.
