Surge in demand! Dafei adjusts PSS from Asia to the Red Sea, spends huge sums of money to charter ships, and launches special routes!

Jun 17,2024

At present, due to the chaotic situation in the Red Sea, the continued tension of transport capacity, port congestion and other factors, freight rates are still high.

The latest Shanghai Freight Index (SCFI) released by the Shanghai Shipping Exchange on June 14 was 3379.22 points, up 6.1 per cent from the previous period.

At the same time, shipping companies are still issuing price increase notices one after another.
On June 14, French shipping giant Dafei announced that starting from June 20, 2024 (loading date), it will update the peak season surcharge (PSS) from all ports in Asia to the Middle East Gulf, Red Sea and Indian subcontinent until further notice.

The specific amount is $1000 per 20 feet of dry and reefer containers (all types) and $2000 per 40 feet of dry and reefer containers (all types).

It is understood that Dafei recently signed a short-term charter contract for a 7000 TEU new ship with a rent of up to 105,000 US dollars per day.
It is reported that the 7,092 TEU "Kota Callao" is one of the six ships built by China's Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding) for Taiwan's Dexiang Shipping (TS Lines). Confirmed by several charter brokers, the ship has been chartered for 3 months with a daily rent of 105,000 US dollars and will be delivered within the next two weeks.

With the return of six-figure daily charter rates, container charter rates have set a new record since the epidemic, and liner companies are once again paying sky-high rentals for short-term rentals, also marking the return of small container operators to Asia-Europe trade routes.

Dafei also recently announced on its website that it will launch a "French Peak Service" service, a seasonal service designed to meet the surging demand for maritime transportation between Asia, Northern Europe and the Mediterranean.
Dafei said that from June 30 to early September, seven additional vessels 7000 TEUs will be deployed on the route, departing from China every two weeks, alternately calling ports in Northern Europe (Le Havre, Antwerp) and the Mediterranean (Marina Foss, Malta).

In addition, the opening of the new route will increase the available capacity by 25% in this high-demand market, which will help ease the pressure on maritime transportation.

The port of call sequence for this French peak season route is as follows:
Yantian-Vau Tau-Singapore-Le Havre-Antwerp
Shekou-Vau Tau-Singapore-Foreshore-Malta
The inaugural ship departed from the port of Yantian on 30 June 2024 by the "APL OREGON.
In response to the Asia-Europe route market, analysts at the Shanghai Shipping Exchange said that the Red Sea crisis has not been alleviated, and major shipping companies continue to sail around, exacerbating the tension in the supply of capacity in the market. At present, most flights on Asia-Europe routes are fully loaded, and booking prices in the spot market continue to rise.
