Major accident! Details of Container Ship Crash and Collapse of a Bridge in the United States

May 17,2024

On May 14, local time, the National Transportation Safety Board released a preliminary investigation report on the bridge collision in Baltimore, Maryland. The investigation results showed that the "Dali" freighter had multiple power outages before the bridge collision.

According to the report, preliminary investigations found that the "Dali" experienced a power outage about 10 hours before leaving the port of Baltimore. The reason was that a crew member mistakenly closed the exhaust valve while arriving at the port for maintenance, causing a diesel generator on the cargo ship to stall. The standby generator started automatically immediately, but stopped after a short period of operation due to insufficient fuel pressure, causing a power outage again. The crew then adjusted the power configuration, replacing a transformer and circuit breaker system that had been in use for months with a system that was active at the time of departure.

However, the freighter experienced two more power outages while in motion. About 4 minutes before the bridge collision and about 1km away from the bridge, all lighting equipment and most other equipment on board were cut off due to the accidental trip of the circuit breaker. After that, the power was briefly restored, but when the freighter reached a distance of about 320 meters from the bridge, the power was cut off again, all three steering pumps stopped working, the crew could not control the direction, and the freighter finally hit the bridge with yaw.

The National Transportation Safety Board of the United States launched an investigation immediately after the incident, and is still investigating the power configuration after the first power outage when the "Dali" docked at the port, and the potential impact of this on the power outage during the driving process. It may take a year or more for all investigations to be completed.

Investigators also tested the fuel used by the ship and found no quality problems, the report said. Before and after the accident, the crew were repeatedly tested for drugs and alcohol, and no problems were found.

The US Federal Bureau of investigation launched a criminal investigation in April. Investigators boarded the "Dali" to collect evidence and found the "black box" that recorded the key information of the freighter ".

Shortly after leaving the port in the early morning of March 26, the "Dali" crashed into the Baltimore "Francis Scott Key" Bridge due to loss of power, causing the steel bridge to collapse and eight construction workers on the bridge to fall into the water, two of whom were rescued and six others died.

The Port of Baltimore is an important port on the East Coast of the United States, and the bridge collision accident caused the port shipping to be blocked. The Port of Baltimore has now opened four temporary channels and is expected to resume full operation by the end of May. According to estimates by the Maryland government, the bridge reconstruction project will cost between $1.7 billion and $1.9 billion and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2028.
