Dafei container ship again into the Red Sea! The Houthis have announced their latest targets!
Feb 23,2024

After suspending the Red Sea voyage on February 1, Dafei sent container ships to brave the Red Sea on the 20th. On the same day, the Houthi armed forces stated that they attacked the Israeli ship "MSC Silver II" (actually operated by Mediterranean Shipping (MSC)) near the Gulf of Aden through multiple missiles.
Dafei Container Ship Braves the Red Sea
The CMA CGM container ship Jules Verne(186,470 dwt) has crossed the Red Sea for the first time in nearly three weeks.
The company confirmed the trip in a brief statement to the Maritime Executive, and said: "In coordination with the French Navy, the Delta ship Jules Verne passed through the Red Sea smoothly under the escort of the frigate Alsace. For the safety of our crew and the ship, the ship will not comment further.
After one of its ships was targeted by Houthi militants, Dafei announced that it would suspend all transit activities in the Red Sea from February 1. Until then, the shipping company has been deciding to send a limited number of ships through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea on a case-by-case basis.
As to why the "Jules Verne" maintained its original route, Dafei did not give a clear explanation, nor did it disclose whether other ships would continue to use this route.

According to Sea-Intelligence, while supply chain stakeholders have quickly adapted to the new routes, the accuracy rate between the Far East and Europe has fallen below 50%. "Ship-to-date reliability has become a concern, and this situation will continue for at least a few months." Caill added.
In the face of continuing tensions in the Red Sea region, Hapg-Lloyd has recently made operational adjustments. On February 20, Hapg-Lloyd announced the launch of the new Turkey-Red Sea feeder route TRS(Türiye Red Sea Feeder Service) to meet current shipping challenges.
The TRS route will make its maiden voyage from the Turkish port of Iskenderun on March 3. The maiden voyage will be "LEYLA KALKAVAN" with the port sequence of: Iskenderun (Turkey)-Mersin (Turkey)-Jeddah (Saudi Arabia)-Aqaba (Jordan)-Iskenderun (Turkey).
Houthis announce latest targets
Recently, the Houthis have again upgraded their means and frequency of attack. According to statistics, three ships have been attacked in a week. And just yesterday, the Houthi armed forces once again announced their new targets, this time they directly pointed to the largest container shipping company-MSC.
On the evening of February 20, local time, Houthi spokesman Yahya Sareya issued a statement saying that the Houthi armed forces had used a number of missiles to attack the "MSC Silver II", a grocery ship operated and managed by MSC.

Security analysts have confirmed reports of an attack on a cargo ship bound for Somalia. The ship is a Liberian-registered grocery ship named "MSC Silver II" (37500 dwt), managed by Mediterranean Shipping Management Company. The ship is equipped with a deck crane and can carry about 800 containers.
The MSC Silver II was reportedly undamaged and its Automatic Identification System (AIS) signal showed the ship is currently docked in Somalia.Berbera(Berbera)。

Houthi spokesman Yahya Sarri said the MSC SILVER II was an Israeli vessel.
But according to the Equasis database, the ship is operated by MSC and owned by Silverfjord Oceanway, whose address is listed in the Swiss giant's MSC ship management office in Cyprus. Tracking data shows the ship has not docked in an Israeli port since 2020. The ship has no apparent connection to Israel.

In this regard, maritime security company Ambrey Analytics pointed out that perhaps MSC has been working with Israeli container ship operator Zim. Last September, Zim announced a cooperation agreement with MSC on a number of trade deals. The company's vessels regularly call at Israeli ports.
