Global shipping changes: Maersk, MSC adjust routes to ensure smooth arrival of goods
Jan 29,2024

The situation in the Red Sea continues to escalate and deteriorate. Recently, the Houthi armed forces directly attacked a US warship for the first time and hit a British oil tanker with a missile, causing a fire. International shipping continues to be severely disrupted over the past two monthsof the Suez CanalTrade volumes fell by 42 per cent, with the impact on container shipping in particular.
The latest data released by the Shanghai Shipping Exchange on January 26 showed that compared with the previous week, China's export container freight composite index rose 9%, while European routes rose 12.9. According to the European Agricultural and Agricultural Trade Liaison Committee, the Red Sea crisis may affect the EU's agricultural imports and exports worth 70 billion euros.

MSC adjusts course to tackle disruptions caused by Red Sea crisis
In view of the current situation in the Red Sea, MSC has temporarily suspended all eastbound and westbound Suez Canal crossings. This decision led to the diversion of all ships to the Cape of Good Hope, with wide-ranging implications for the global shipping network.
In order to mitigate the impact of this diversion on shipping schedule, MSC has said in its statement that it is adjusting its east-west route. These adjustments include changes to the voyage and rotation system, an increase in the number of ships, aimed at minimizing interference with shipping and ensuring that navigation through the Cape of Good Hope can be more efficient.
The updated rotation arrangements will be formally implemented in early February.
