According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, about 27 percent of shoes and clothing collected by U.S. Customs and Border Protection in May were found to be related to cotton from China's Xinjiang region, where the United States had banned imports of products from the region on the grounds of forced labor and required them to be removed from the supply chain.IMG_257it is learned that to help enforce the law, customs officials have turned to isotope testing,By analyzing the concentration of stable elements such as carbon and hydrogen in crops and their growing environment, cotton can be linked to specific geographical areas.According to the documents, 10 of the 37 garments seized by the Customs and Border Protection in May were returned because they were "consistent" with their origin in Xinjiang. So far, as part of law enforcement efforts, according to U.S. government documents,U.S. Customs has collected at least three shipments of footwear and apparel on December 22, 2022, April 11, 2023, and May 23, 2023.Thirteen of the 86 tests, or 15 percent, were deemed to be consistent with Xinjiang. Included in the documents are the clothing brands that were tested. The product description details a range of clothing, from boxers, jeans and T-shirts to baby jumpsuits and dress. All materials contain cotton and in some cases mixed with other textiles such as spandex and rayon. Customs officials did not address questions about the test results, including how they selected clothing for analysis.Eric Choy, executive director of U.S. Customs Trade Remedies and Enforcement, said isotope testing has not yet become a "regular procedure" for U.S. Customs ". U.S. ports can request testing if they receive allegations about specific shipments or if they suspect they are linked to Xinjiang. Many retailers are also turning to isotope testing to ensure their supply chains are free of Xinjiang cotton. Some or all goods produced in Xinjiang are banned in the United States. The general meaning can be seen, but from the inspection behavior, not only the finished products produced here are not good, even if they are produced elsewhere but the products contain the raw materials here.
IMG_258A federal report released last year estimated that cotton from Xinjiang accounted for about 87 percent of China's production and 23 percent of global supply in 2020 and 2021. Countries including Vietnam, Cambodia and Bangladesh (one of the world's largest producers of cotton clothing and consumer goods) still import large amounts of finished fabrics from China. These banned products often enter the United States in the form of clothing made by suppliers in those countries, the report said. It is reported that many large foreign companies have signed contracts with isotope testing companies to verify the origin of cotton in their supply chains. What do you think about this? Has your industry also suffered to some extent?
