First over Greece! How did China become the world's largest shipowner?
Aug 28,2023

According to the latest data, from January to July this year, China's shipbuilding industry ranked first in the world in terms of shipbuilding completion, new orders and hand-held orders, and continued to lead the world.
At the same time, the size of the fleet held by Chinese shipowners reached 0.2492 billion gross tons, surpassing Greece for the first time to become the world's largest shipowner.
What is the shipowner's country?
The shipowner is the legal holder of the Certificate of Ownership of the Ship and the person who legally owns the sovereignty of the ship, and the shipowner's country is the country where these shipowners are located.
The world's largest shipowner means that China has the largest fleet in the world.
As of August 12, the fleet size held by Chinese shipowners has reached 0.2492 billion gross tons, accounting for 15.9 per cent of the market share (the value of Chinese shipowners' fleet is about $180 billion).

It is slightly higher than the gross tonnage of 0.249 billion of Greek shipowners, with a market share of 15.8 per cent (Greek shipowners' fleet is worth about $163 billion).
From January to July 2023, China's shipbuilding completions 24.09 million dwt, up 15.6 percent year-on-year; new orders received 44.76 million dwt, up 74 percent year-on-year; and hand-held orders 127.9 million dwt, up 23.4 percent year-on-year. Not only the three indicators are ranked first in the world, the added value of the ship type received is also getting higher and higher.
This year, China Shipbuilding Group accounted for 18.6 percent of the world's completed deliveries, ranking first among global shipbuilders. A number of high-end ship types, such as the world's largest super-large container ship, the 80000 Fangjiang-sea combined LNG ship, and the world's first M350 offshore floating storage and unloading oil ship, were successfully delivered.
How China overtook Greece
The first is demand driven.
According to Zhang Shouguo, executive vice president of the China Shipowners Association, the core and essence of China's ability to become the world's largest shipowner country is due to the development of China's economy. As the second largest economy in the world, China's shipping mainly serves trade.
In 2022, the total value of my country's foreign trade import and export will be 42.07 trillion yuan. my country has maintained its status as the world's largest trading country in goods for 6 consecutive years.
In terms of scale, China occupies eight of the world's top ten ports.

The second is the manufacturing industry.
China is the largest shipbuilding country, and about 40% of the world's ships are made in China.

According to the relevant person in charge of China Shipbuilding Dalian Shipbuilding, the ship types ordered this year are more and more high-tech and high value-added. The main ship types are LNG (liquefied natural gas) carriers, 300000-ton tankers, and other bulk carriers.
China's shipbuilding strength is strong, and it also provides strong support for China to become the world's largest shipowner.
How to go from big to strong
As a major shipping country in the world, China has been elected as a Class A member of the International Maritime Organization for the 17th consecutive time.
Although China has become the world's largest shipowner, there is still a lot of room for development in terms of capacity. In addition, the fleet is large but not strong, the structure is unreasonable, and the lack of ship data and maritime navigation services are the shortcomings that our country needs to overcome.

For example, in the past two years, my country's LNG transportation demand and automobile transportation demand have blown out, but my country's capacity in these areas is only in the second echelon of the world; my country's ships still need to rely on meteorological navigation data provided by the United States, Japan and other countries in international voyages. This may become a risk point of "stuck neck" in the future.
At present, with the support of the Ministry of Transport, the Shanghai International Shipping Research Center is applying for the establishment of the transportation industry standard "Technical Requirements for Ship Transaction Data.
It is hoped that with the efforts of all parties, the soft power of our ships will be upgraded and upgraded from a shipping power to a shipping power.
