The new system scores applicants in terms of labor skills, qualifications, salary levels, language skills, job opportunities, etc. Applicants can only be allowed to work in the UK if they get enough points. Highly skilled people, including scientists, engineers and academics, have become a key target group for attracting migration in the UK.
But after the new points system was put into operation, Britain began to experience a severe labor shortage. According to a report released by the British Parliament, 13.3 per cent of companies surveyed in November 2022 said they were experiencing labor shortages.
The proportion of labor shortage in enterprises engaged in accommodation and catering services is even as high as 35.5 per cent, and the proportion of shortage in the construction industry is 20.7 per cent.
According to a study released by the Center for European Reform, a British think tank, in January this year, EU employees have decreased by 460000 by June 2022 after the new min system came into effect in 2021. Although 130000 non-EU employees have partially filled the gap, this has also led to a serious gap of 330000 in the UK labor market in six key areas.

Hongde Xiaobian believes that the serious labor shortage has hindered the economic development of the UK, especially those industries that have employed a large number of EU employees, which are facing many problems.
