Within 24 hours! Four attacks on one ship!

2024-08-13 10:16

Delta Blue, a crude oil tanker, reported four attacks in the waters off Yemen's Moka port in the past 24 hours, the United Kingdom's maritime trade operations said on Friday. The attacked vessel was the Suezmax tanker "Delta Blue". The ship's captain reported that on Thursday the ship was approached by two small boats, which fired a rocket that exploded near the tanker (about 45 nautical miles south of Puerto Moca). The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Service said there were four militants on each of the two boats. A few hours later, in the early hours of Friday, a second attack took place, with a missile "exploding close to the ship." In the third attack, a small boat and an unmanned surface craft approached and attacked the ship.

On Friday, maritime security company Ambrey reported that the "Delta Blue" was attacked by another unmanned surface ship and a missile that landed near the vessel. Ambrey said that the armed guards on the "Delta Blue" opened fire on the unmanned surface ship as it approached the vessel at a rapid pace and successfully destroyed it. When asked about the incidents, Athens-based Delta Tankers told Reuters that both the crew and the vessel were safe. Delta Blue's manager added: "The vessel is moving on. "The Delta Blue departed from Arbuck, Iraq, on 28 July and shut down the AIS on board after sailing past Oman on 5 August. At 4 a.m. on August 10, the ship's AIS was reopened, and armed guards are currently shown on board. According to Equasis, the public shipping database of the "Delta Blue" is registered as Nerida Maritime, and the ISM/ship/commercial management company is Delta Tankers. While there have been several attacks on individual ships by militants in the past, the incident has left security analysts speculating about the situation, and the Houthis have yet to officially claim responsibility for the attacks. Previously, the Houthis had confirmed attacks on specific ships, but they have now been suspended.

Earlier this week, however, the Houthis claimed to have "succeeded" in attacking the United States destroyer USS Cole with multiple drones in the Gulf of Aden, as well as attacking the United States destroyer Laboun with ballistic missiles. And using a number of ballistic missiles and drones, a merchant ship located in the Red Sea was attacked, and "accurately hit the target." But the attack was not confirmed by United States officials. Maritime security consultancy Vanguard reported that Delta Blue did not appear to have any connection to the Houthis' main targets, the United States, United Kingdom or Israel. The company clashed with Iran, and one of its ships was seized in 2022. Delta Poseidon is one of two ships that were seized in May 2022 and held in Iran for six months. Maritime security group Neptune P2P speculated: "The intensity of this prolonged attack suggests that the vessel is likely to have ties to Israel, both in terms of ownership and recent trade activity." "Yemen's Houthi rebels have been attacking international shipping in the Red Sea region since last November in solidarity with Palestinians in Israel's war with Hamas. The attacks were met with retaliatory blows from United States and United Kingdom and disrupted global trade as shipping companies diverted ships from the Red Sea and the Suez Canal to make longer routes around the southern tip of Africa.

The attack, while ultimately not having serious consequences, reminded us of the importance of maritime security. With the continuous development of globalized trade, the safety of maritime transportation has attracted more and more attention.
