The freight rate on the route from the Far East to South America has risen sharply within two weeks, with a cumulative increase of 32.78%. At the same time, freight rates on the Asia-Africa route are also on the rise. Leading shipping companies such as Maersk, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, etc. have issued price increase letters, with some routes increasing by nearly 70%, causing shipping costs to rise further.

Faced with the rapidly rising freight rates on South American routes, major shipping companies such as CMA CGM, COSCO Shipping Lines, OOCL, Evergreen Line, PIL, Yang Ming Shipping, etc. have taken actions to optimize existing Latin American routes or jointly open new routes. , to respond to market changes and meet growing freight demand.

Maersk imposes South America East Peak Season Surcharge PSS

On April 25, Maersk issued a notice on its official website to revise (raise) the peak season surcharge (PSS) for all dry containers from Far East Asia (excluding Taiwan, China) to the east coast of South America. The effective date is from May 1 to May 2024. The validity period for travel from Vietnam to the east coast of South America is from May 8 to May 31, 2024; the validity period from Taiwan to the east coast of South America is from May 23 to May 31, 2024. The 20-foot dry box is US$1,000, and the 40-foot and 45-foot dry boxes are US$2,000.

On April 24, Maersk’s official website issued a notice that starting from April 29, 2024, peak season surcharges from China and Hong Kong to Angola, Cameroon, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Namibia, Central African Republic, and Chad will be levied. The 20-foot dry box is US$700, and the 40-foot and 45-foot dry boxes are US$1,400.

On April 25, Maersk issued a notice on its official website. Starting from May 1, 2024, it will target passengers from North China and South Korea to Jawaharlal Nehru in India, Mundra in India, Pipavaf in India, and Pakistan.
